Davin

Davin has been practicing Martial Arts since he was about 8 years old!
Check out his story below:

How long have you been training in martial arts: I started doing Martial Arts at Phoenix when I was about eight or nine years old, so about nine or ten years, though there have been some breaks in that. Honestly, I'm not exactly sure. I also took Karate for about six months shortly before starting at Phoenix.

Who has been your biggest influence or mentor within the dojo, and how have they impacted your training?: I'd say my biggest influence has probably been Sensei Brennan. I think the biggest thing I've learned is the importance of systems. Knowing individual moves is a vital first step, but knowing where to go after a move succeeds (or fails) is incredible useful skill.

What has been the most surprising thing you've learned about yourself through martial arts?:  One of the most surprising things I've learned about myself is that I really enjoy taking on physical challenges.

Describe a moment in your training where you felt a significant breakthrough : The last time I remember having a big revelation about Martial Arts was when I was working with Dan Curran on my side control top game. He pointed out that I was shifting my weight too much in order to compensate for my smaller size, and that was making escaping really easy. With some additional feedback from Dan I was able to significantly tighten my side control, just by reducing how much I was shifting my weight. It's something I haven't been able to fully replicate in grappling conditions, but is something I've been continuing to work toward.

What aspect of martial arts do you find most challenging, and how do you approach it?  One aspect of martial arts I struggle with is believing in my technique. I've seen that when I believe in myself and don't overcompensate for escape attempts when I'm on top, I can have a decent top game. However, when I'm grappling with someone who's substantially bigger and stronger than me, it's still something I tend to struggle with.

If you could share one life lesson that martial arts has taught you, what would it be? Something I've learned from martial arts is that even if it seems like you aren't making much progress, if you stick with something, eventually when you look back, you might be amazed at how far you've come.

Help us raise funds for a cause that is close to our heart.

At RPMA Tap Cancer Out holds a special place in our hearts. Two of our own members have faced the battle against cancer, showing incredible strength and resilience. This fundraiser is more than just an event—it's a way for us to honor their fight and come together as a community.

By participating and fundraising, we're not only supporting a vital cause but also strengthening the bonds that make our dojo a family. Let’s unite, roll for a cure, and make a difference together.
