Whether you are brand new to martial arts or an experienced grappler looking for a place to train, Rochester Jiu Jitsu offers Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes for adults of all experience levels.
Our BJJ program focuses on practical skills, technical development, fitness, and a training environment where beginners and experienced students can learn together.
No experience is necessary. Your first class is free.
Starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be intimidating. You don't need to be in great shape, know how to fight, or have any previous martial arts experience before walking through the door.
Our classes are designed to allow new students to begin learning alongside experienced practitioners. You'll learn the fundamental positions, movements, escapes, controls, and submissions that form the foundation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
As you gain experience, you'll build on those fundamentals and begin developing a style that works for you.
Rochester Jiu Jitsu offers both Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu .
Gi BJJ uses the traditional Jiu Jitsu uniform and incorporates grips on the jacket and pants as part of controlling and submitting an opponent.
No-Gi BJJ is practiced in athletic clothing or a rash guard and shorts and emphasizes movement, wrestling, body control, and grips that don't depend on clothing.
Training in both gives students experience with different styles of grappling and a more complete understanding of Jiu Jitsu.
A typical BJJ class includes a warm-up, instruction and drilling, followed by opportunities to practice techniques against a resisting partner.
New students are introduced to training at an appropriate pace. You won't be expected to know what you're doing on your first day, and you don't need to compete to train.
Some members train because they enjoy learning Jiu Jitsu. Others are interested in fitness, self-defense or competition. All of those goals are welcome.
Our adult program includes everyone from first-day beginners to experienced Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners.
Training partners vary in size, age, athletic background, and experience. One of the advantages of BJJ is that progress doesn't depend solely on being bigger, stronger, or more athletic. Technique, timing, positioning, and experience become increasingly important as you train.
Students who want to compete also have opportunities to prepare for local and regional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournaments.
Competition is always optional.
Adult membership at Rochester Jiu Jitsu includes access to more than Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Members can also train in Judo and Muay Thai , allowing you to add throwing, takedowns, and striking to your martial arts training.
