What surprised you the most when you started BJJ?
As someone who arrived with wrestling experience, I was surprised with how much
I didn't know. The level of detail, the flow, and the positional chess of BJJ
caught me off guard. I thought my grappling background would carry me further,
but I quickly realized BJJ is a different world—one that demands patience,
humility, and a whole new mindset.
What keeps you motivated to show up, even on tough days?
Even on days that I don’t want to show up or I start making excuses, I remind
myself that I’ve never left the gym and regretted training.
That post-roll clarity, the community, and the sense of personal growth are
incredibly grounding. On tough days, just showing up is the win. That
discipline builds over time and keeps me mentally sharp far beyond the mats.
What’s been your proudest BJJ moment so far?
As an instructor, I find great pride in watching students progress and achieve
their individual goals. Seeing their confidence grow, their technique sharpen,
and witnessing the exact moment something “clicks” for them—those are the
moments that remind me why I love this art. It’s not just about my journey
anymore; it’s about helping others find theirs.
Ever had a funny or awkward moment on the mats?
I plead the fifth. But in all honesty, I love that we train incredibly hard
with each other, pushing each other to our breaking point, while still being
able to laugh. Jiu-jitsu creates moments that remind us that we’re human,
and it’s okay to not take ourselves too seriously.
What’s one goal you’ve crushed recently—on or off the
mats?
With an incredibly busy schedule, I was very proud to remain in the highest
tier of attendance at the gym. It wasn't easy balancing life, work, and
training, but making time to show up consistently has been a big win.
Consistency is everything in this sport, and it felt good to prove to myself
that I could keep that commitment, no matter what.
What would you say to someone who’s nervous about
starting?
If you want to start up but are nervous, know that every single person who’s
now ahead of you once stood exactly where you are. It’s normal to feel unsure
at first, but don’t let that hold you back. BJJ isn’t about being the best in
the room—it’s about being better than you were yesterday. You’re not expected
to know everything; just be willing to learn and show up. That’s what matters
most.
